The Todoist node lets you create, update, close, delete, and retrieve tasks in Todoist from within an n8n workflow. You can set the task content, project, due date, priority, labels, and assignee programmatically. This means external events in other systems can automatically generate tasks in Todoist without anyone manually creating them.

Not natively, but through n8n you can build two-way sync between Todoist and other tools. For example, creating a task in Todoist could trigger a workflow that creates a corresponding ticket in Jira, or completing a task in another system could automatically close the matching Todoist task. The key is having clear rules about which system is the source of truth for each field.

A consulting firm uses an n8n workflow that monitors their inbox for new client enquiries. When one arrives, the workflow creates a Todoist task in the "New Leads" project with the client's name, contact details, and a due date set for the next business day. The account manager sees the task in their Todoist app and follows up. When they complete the task, a follow-up workflow logs the outcome.

Todoist's API supports creating tasks with recurring due dates using natural language strings like "every Monday" or "every 2 weeks". Through n8n, you can create these recurring tasks programmatically. However, managing changes to recurring tasks via API can be tricky since each occurrence is connected to the parent task, so updates need to be handled carefully.

Todoist's API has a rate limit of around 450 requests per 15 minutes. For most automation use cases this is sufficient, but bulk operations (like creating hundreds of tasks at once) need to be throttled. The API also doesn't expose all features available in the app, such as board views and some collaboration features.

Step 1

Workflow & Task Template Design

Build n8n Workflows with Todoist Node

We configure the Todoist node in n8n with your API credentials and build each workflow. This covers task creation with dynamic content, label assignment, project routing, and any conditional logic needed (like only creating tasks during business hours or skipping duplicates). We also set up completion triggers if tasks need to update other systems when closed.
